Mission Street Food and Fashionist

On Thursday, April 16th, I will be on hand to take photos in front of Mission Street Food. If you're in SF and haven't heard of MSF, you may be in the minority. They've been covered by NPR and the SFGate.com and if it isn't obvious, I have a little crush on them. As Karen mentions, I'm a big fan and I go there at least once a week, sometimes twice a week. I know food and fashion don't necessarily go hand-in-hand, but fashionist isn't really about fashion, it's about style and MSF has that in spades. They even donate the proceeds of the evening to a local non-profit, Thursday it will be Meals on Wheels. (I'll stop my gushing now.)

Anyhow, on Thursday (April 16th), I'll be out front shooting photos of people who come to MSF. I'll shoot for as long as lighting and people to shoot are available. After the fact, MSF will be holding a contest for the community to decide who the best dressed of the evening are. You'll decide by emailing them or perhaps you'll comment on relevant posts on our blogs (fashioni.st and/or blog.missionstreetfood.com) to let us know what you think. Those chosen will receive a free meal with wine at MSF. If you've been curious about MSF or want to congratulate me on two years of documenting SF street fashion (or just wanna say "hi"), this is your opportunity.

Also! One more thing: their MSF Rice (Smoky Rice fried in Duck Fat with Duck Confit, Duck Cracklins, Shitake, and Cauliflower- $8) is my favorite. I am excited it's on the menu: it'll hit the spot after taking (I hope) scads of photos.

Hope to see you there!

Costume Dept. - Pool Tradeshow, Las Vegas

From left to right: Nika, Liv, Designer Shawn Kaleka and Sherille.

This photo is an example of the didn't know I'd switch to larger photos format. Sorry if it looks funky. Their clothes are amazing and they were really nice, so check them out.

Update: Things will be a little confusing this week, I still have photos to post from the Magic Marketplace, but I've been taking SF photos too, so I'm gonna intersperse them. On the bonus side, more variety! Again, thanks for looking at the site and commenting. I'm dreaming up plans and collaborations and will keep shooting, as long as you'll keep coming by. :)

Nina - Magic Marketplace, Las Vegas

I like how Betsey Johnson's signature crinoline skirts and floral patterns have popped up in her collection again. Since I'm at Magic Marketplace, I'm gonna take photos of cutely dressed booth babes, as well as fashionists walking around the trade show (both inside and out). Please bear with me because I don't often take indoor photos. There won't be quotes from booth babes dressed in outfits from their employer because we all understand their motivation for what they are wearing. Anyhow, Nina and the person who was running the booth were very kind. Actually everyone was really nice yesterday. We're heading out on day two soon.

Lovely strappy shoes in patent pink, but I was informed that they aren't Betsey Johnson.

At Magic Marketplace

I'm at Magic Marketplace in Vegas. Feeling camera ready to take photos of the well heeled. Tonight I'm gonna practice taking indoor photos, so I'll be ready tomorrow for the awesomeness that is promised.

If you spot me, please say "hi". I'm really excited to be here with fashionable friends from other parts of the US.

I'm staying at Paris and will be walking the Las Vegas Convention Center floor tomorrow, bright and early. If you'd like to meet up, you can contact me by leaving a comment on this site or send out an @mai on twitter. Hope to meet loads 'o' fashionists.

Thanks!

From the Street to the Blog

This photo of Emma as well as 99 other fashionist photos are part of the exhibition "From the Street to the Blog" curated by Colette for Rencontres d'Arles, a world renowned photography Festival in the South of France, happening July 8 to September 14th.

In one room at Espace Van Gogh, 20 monitors designed by Andrée Putman for Parrot will be displayed on a wall like a frame, with images sliding inside: one screen per street blog.

Thank you to Sarah and Anais of Colette for inviting me to participate alongside esteemed bloggers such Oslo Stil, Facehunter, The Sartorialist, Stil in Berlin and many others. I'm very, very excited to have fashionist included with such an impressive group of street fashion sites.

If you happen to be attending Rencontres d'Arles or are in the region, please stop by and report back.

Stylized Sculpture at the Asian Art Museum

Photo by Hiroshi Sugimoto of a Junya Watanabe dress for Comme des Garcon, taken from the Asian Art Museum website.

Yesterday evening I had the opportunity to preview the Asian Art Museum's exhibit of Japanese fashion designers, Stylized Sculpture: Contemporary Japanese Fashion from the Kyoto Costume Institute. Opening tomorrow, this exhibition is a departure for the Asian Art Museum, who hasn't (until now) done an exhibition of clothes/ costume. I'm knowledgeable about previous AAM exhibits, being a member (and having worked there), so believe me when I say they've done a great job of displaying the items to their best advantage. If you're able to have an empty gallery experience, consider how they display the couture - one room had pleated colored frocks on one side of an L-shape, the other side simpler white garments - along with the mastery of the individual garments.

From the press release:

In conceiving of Stylized Sculpture, Sugimoto states that he “looks at the human body and the man-made skins that envelop it as contemporary sculpture. Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, and other Japanese designers have defiantly challenged the elegance of European mainstream fashion, vastly expanding the very concept of this artificial skin … and they have incarnated these creations with textures, colors, and shapes worthy of definition as sculpture.”

Later I'll upload photos of some of the attendees. If you're a local or planning to pass through in the next few months - Go.

Mai and CW - de Young Museum, SF (Quick Shots)

Sorry for the delay in posting. Very good friends wed this weekend and there was much celebration leading up to the event (and of course the blow-out event itself). I'm a wuss at recovery, but I've got some photos in the pipe and will be uploading them shortly.

I'm wearing a blue wool coat, that I've had for 11 years, a floor length Diane von Furstenberg dress in her palm tree print, and Forever 21 earrings that didn't last the night. CW's wearing a tuxedo as part of the wedding party.
